What goes up when the rain comes down? An umbrella, of course. An afterthought under sunny skies, a necessity when it’s raining, or as an accessory to a well-planned ensemble, there’s nothing quite like a good umbrella.
WBTV meteorologist Al Conklin expects no threat of rain until the middle of next week, but rain or shine, February 10th is National Umbrella Day; a day to celebrate this functional and fashionable piece of gear!
The basic umbrella was invented over four thousand years ago, according to the website, NationalCalendarDay.com. There is evidence of umbrellas in the ancient art and artifacts of Egypt, Assyria, Greece and China. Give the Chinese credit for the first waterproof umbrellas. Word is they waxed their paper umbrellas to protect themselves from the rain. Well done!
Aside from their obvious utility, umbrellas have been more than memorable props in movies from, “Singing in the Rain,” to “Mary Poppins,” to “The Batman Returns.” Remember? Danny DeVito played The Penguin in that one! The umbrella’s usefulness goes way beyond keeping our heads out of the rain or sun. Umbrellas make incredible platforms for branding, too. Whether on sidewalk cafes, staked out on the beach, or in our hands, umbrellas can be fun and functional billboards for your brand. With so many styles, colors, and sizes, no two your logo’d umbrellas will always stand out in the crowd.
